St Mary's is pleased to present organist Curt Bergen and pianist Pamela Whiston in concert as part of the Catherine Young Summer Concert series.
Curt is currently the music director of St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Oak Bay. Growing up in Vanderhoof B.C., he began piano studies at age 7, playing at a local church by age 12. After graduating from Prairie Bible College in Three Hills, Alberta, he attended the University of Victoria where he majored in musicology and organ. Further studies were at Southern Seminary in Louisville Kentucky where he completed a Master’s degree in church music and organ. Upon his return to Victoria he began working as a church organist at Emmanuel Baptist Church, where he met and married Elizabeth. After leaving Emmanuel in 1993 he took a position as organist at Saint Matthias, remaining there for 6 years before moving to Saint Mary’s Oak Bay in 1999. Curt has accompanied many community choirs over the years, and taught piano and organ lessons to many children and adults. Curt and Elizabeth have two daughters, Rachel, and Naomi. Rachel has followed in her father’s footsteps by choosing a career in music.
Having recently moved here from Alberta, Pamela is pleased to join the Victoria music community. She began piano lessons with her mother at the age of five, and is a graduate of the University of Alberta with a degree in Piano Performance. Pamela has accompanied many choirs and musicians over the years. In 2009 opportunities opened up to play chamber music with string players. In the past few years “the quintet” has performed several concerts, raising funds for a grand piano at Sherwood Park Church of the Nazarene and for various charities.
