Evolving out of two ancient services of prayer as the sun is setting—vespers and compline—the service of Evensong is an opportunity to put the events of the past day into perspective, to ground one’s body, mind and spirit in preparation for the restorative night of sleep, when in our dreaming, our subconscious will continue the creative work of making sense of our experiences.
Jazz, as Ken Burns says, is “a profound intersection of freedom and creativity”. So, whether you are a seasoned jazz lover or a newcomer to the genre, you will be sure to find something to speak to you at this unique and moving experience of making sense of your day. Don’t miss your chance to be a part of this inspiring and intimate celebration of faith and music. All are welcome!
A collection will be taken in support of this ongoing series.
Broke and Blue came together when pianist Kathryn Le Gros and flutist Diane Berry first discovered their mutual love of the music of French jazz pianist Claude Bolling (1930-2020). With two suites for flute and jazz piano, as well as several other works, there is a rich choice of wonderful music available to them. Bolling’s fusion of classical and jazz elements in his work is a wonderful vehicle for these two classically trained, versatile musicians. Both are experienced performers, connected to several ensembles in and around Victoria, embracing many different genres and styles.
In the years since forming Broke and Blue, they have performed for jazz vespers in local churches, created videos for Vancouver Symphony’s Day of Music, performed at Hermann’s Jazz Club, Sooke Fine Arts Show, Superior Jazz, Unsworth Winery, Merridale Cidery, corporate functions, and live-streamed a concert for Augmented Trio Promotions.
They will be joined by bassist Ryan Tandy and drummer Gregory Law, as they frequently are, to realize the full jazz sound. Their repertoire now includes music by Uwe Korn, Arthur Frackenpohl, Ian Clarke, Moe Koffman, Dave Brubeck, and some well-known jazz standards.
